East Gippsland acknowledges the Gunaikurnai, Monero and the Bidawel people as the Traditional Custodians of the land that encompasses East Gippsland Shire. We pay our respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in East Gippsland, their Elders past and present.

A Place of Discovery

Gippsland’s traditional owners are the Gunaikurnai people and our region is rich in indigenous culture and heritage.

The Bataluk Cultural Trail tells the story of the Gunaikurnai, where they came from and what they encountered. Local indigenous residents welcome the opportunity to share their story but ask visitors to respect their land and culture in their behaviour.
