Description
A unique isolated occurrence of the Cabbage Fan-palm better known from the subtropical rainforests of New South Wales and Queensland.
Livostona australis - the Cabbage Tree Palm is a palm that grows naturally in the lowland forest and swamps of southern Queensland and along the east coast of Australia and it occurs further south than any other palm species. It is the only palm that is found naturally in Victoria.
They have thin grey ringed trunks up to 30 m tall topped with a thatch of dark green leaves in fans up to 2 m across.
The name "cabbages" comes from the early settlers boiling the immature leaves for food.
Follow the Cape Conran Road from Marlo and turn left into the Marlo-Cabbage Tree road. Turn left at Palms Track and continue to the Cabbage Tree Palms sign at the parking bay. It is also possible to follow the Princes Highway east from Orbost for 20 kms and turn right onto the Palms Track.
